Before Mind
Practising & teaching meditation and mind based techniques
A 50 HOUR DIPLOMA or just a 4 night retreat......you choose

21-24 July (one space).   St Agnes, Cornwall

A recent survey of yoga teachers revealed that the element of teaching that most appeared to lack confidence, knowledge and maybe their own practise in, was the teaching of meditation or mind based practices. It isn't surprising as to work delicately with our own mind, let alone the minds of others is incredibly challenging and requires a methodological approach as well as having the knowledge and understanding to back that up.

This 50 hour certificated diploma course is recognised by the Independent Yoga Network and offers a mixture of theory, philosophy, self-practice and hands on experience of teaching others.
It is open to teachers and non teachers alike or equally you have the option to take four days on a retreat only basis and join us for breakfast, lunch and two hours of meditation each day (you still get a manual too :)

It draws upon almost 30years of self practice during which time I have shared my understanding with thousands of students from yogis to olympic and extreme athletes; every age group from 5 to 80, and every walk of life from Forbes list personalities to inspiring inner city youth groups.

What I have discovered from all of these encounters is that everyone is exactly the same when it comes to the mind. Regardless of your wealth, culture, age or background we all suffer from the same anxieties and we are all steering our life in an effort to avoid or reduce these. Eventually many individuals will find themselves at the door of meditation after a long and winding search and it is a privilege as well as a serious responsibility to join them along this short part of their path.

Content

You will find yourself learning with a maximum of only four or five other students! This ensures that you can really get to grips with the content and ask any questions that you need to address.

We will set out the basic philosophy of various mind based techniques such as relaxation, meditation, mindfulness and their purpose, including an exploration of the basic elements of mind based work from the perspective of Yoga, Buddhism, Taoism, Advaiita vedanta and others - noting not only their differences in approach but more importantly the key elements and themes that link them at their core. Group practices will involve sitting, breath based, walking meditation in the beautiful surroundings and self investigation or atma vichara.

As a group we will develop through discussion, logical and structured ways in which to organise the teaching of meditation with students, addressing many of the misconceptions and questions around meditation as well as avoiding the pitfalls of confusing students with conflicting or misunderstood content.

We will consider the most common questions that arise and how it is important to embrace 'Upaya' or teaching by wise means to tailor your answers to the individuals own current level of understanding based on their background, culture and experience so far

Hours and Assessment
  • The course is divided up into 30 hours of contact time over four days at our beautiful home set in woodland just outside the village of St Agnes on the Cornish coast. We are a beautiful, mindful walk through the valley down to the sea and set in our own woodland and next to a nature reserve we have countless spots for quiet meditation as well as a meditation room looking down over the trees.
  • The remaining 20 hours is met with a log and record of your own dedicated practice before the course begins and by submitting a book review and feedback on a series of classes in which you taught a progressive series of meditations following completion of the contact hours.
  • There will also be a on to one zoom meeting with students after completion of the assessments to check on progress and cover any post course questions on your practice or teaching
